New BraunAbility Wheelchair Accessible SUV on the Ford Explorer
I’ve just heard some exciting news that will surely excite many people in the wheelchair community. There will now be an alternative to the traditional wheelchair accessible van. I received information that BraunAbility, the world’s leading wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) manufacturer, will begin production of a lowered floor WAV on the Ford Explorer chassis.
The Winamac, Indiana based manufacturer had previously modified a one-off Explorer last year that they presented to a veteran. This vehicle featured a power door and lift in the driver’s position. The modifications to the vehicle were undertaken by West Coast Customs. It was a good attempt to create the first wheelchair accessible SUV.
Braun has since made changes to the concept vehicle and the new 2015 Ford Explorer wheelchair accessible conversion is set to hit the production line in the upcoming months. I’ve been told to expect it to arrive on showroom floors in mid-to-late summer. The new WAV is set to have a lowered floor complete with a kneeling system and an in-floor ramp. I was assured that its functionality will be extremely familiar to those who’ve used the current BraunAbility Entervan conversions.
If you’re attending NMEDA’s annual conference this year, you’ll most likely get the opportunity to witness the Ford Explorer BraunAbility Conversion. I’m expecting Braun to debut their new conversion at the conference in Daytona at the end of February.
