One of our favorite pizza places, and voted “Best Pizza” for three years in a row, Slice of the 80’s gives a nod to the era with an interior that boasts toys from the decade, posters of bands from the 80’s, a large graffiti mural and a video arcade complete with 50 classic games (ranging from Pac Man to Frogger.) Their dough and pizza sauces are all homemade and fresh and they offer 7 different crust flavors including sesame seed, cajun and nacho cheese.

Loaf and a Pound

Family owned and operated, Loaf and a Pound is also committed to making guests fee like family. It’s both an Italian deli and a café, offering hot and cold sandwiches, soups, salads and desserts including traditional Italian cannolis and lemoncello cake. Although the sandwich selection is somewhat limited, they offer a new sandwich feature every month and ingredients are always of the highest quality, with portions aplenty. Wheelchair accessible.

Don’t let the location fool you; tucked in between a laundromat and a tax prep service in a strip mall, Taqueria Alameda is an authentic little gem in Westland. This is a small Mexican market with a kitchen and the chef hails from Oaxaca which is known for serving up some of the best food to be found in all of Mexico. The menu is chock full of everything you would expect in a traditional Mexican café’: tacos, burritos, fajitas, huaraches, tostados, quesadillas, churros, flan, natural fruit smoothies (aguas naturales) and Mexican shakes (licuados). There’s also a kid’s menu.

Locally owned, Nom Nom’s delivers big favor from a little cupcake shop. These are not your mom’s cupcakes; quite the contrary. Cupcakes are available in five categories: booze cakes (infused with liquor), candy/sweet treat cupcakes (think Almond Joy, Butterfinger, S’more), Soda Pop Cupcakes (with flavors like Dr. Pepper, Mt. Dew, Root Beer Float), Cheesecake cupcakes (pumpkin cheesecake, peaches and cream, blueberry cheesecake are just a few options) and fun filled cupcakes (maple bacon, pb&j, pistachio pudding are just three of the many fun filled flavors. ) Looking for a small bite? Marv’s specializes in all things ice cream and offers walk up, drive thru and carhop service Choose from soft serve ice cream cones, yogurt (including fat free and sugar free options), custard, slushies, sundaes, old fashioned shakes, sodas and malts. There are a wide range of flavors to choose from including crème de menthe, hot fudge brownie and crunchy peanut butter.

Chum’s has been churning out the best donuts in Michigan since 1966. You’ll need to set the alarm because they open at 7am and close by noon but you won’t regret it! Donuts are made fresh every morning and lines can form early. Chum’s is a family tradition in Westland. It’s a true mom and pop business that calls to a simpler time; no computers, no automatic drink dispensers, no flavored coffees; just black coffee and endless counters of donuts. This is the epitome of the classic American donut shop.
